Art I want to make sweet sweet love to

"Art is too expensive, I'd rather buy a couch." Well boo on you. Couches wear out, fabric frays, pillows get destroyed. Sit on the floor and buy a gorgeous piece of art instead.

Not only does it bring life into your rooms, it is a wonderful investment and a great conversation starter at all the fabulous dinner parties you throw.

Art is completely subjective, but saying that, here are a few current artists I love.

"Haberdash Clash"
Mixed media: safety pins and sewing needles on canvas

Ann is an amazing mix-media British artist. Her work would definitely be an investment, but a worthy one. She regularly works with the UN, helping to raise awareness on current issues through art.

"Pearly Queen of Lavender Hill"

"Stars and Stripes 1"
An Estonian artist currently living in Tallin. I was first introduced to her work through the Haven Gallery in Austin, TX.

She is a batik artist, which essentially means painting or dyeing cloth or thin canvas. Most of her pieces are of trees and movement within those trees.

From Irinia's blog: "The tree is a symbol of energy. It connects three levels of nature the Underworld, the Earth's surface, and the Heavens. It resembles human life cycle: Birth, Life and Death. Human and Nature are interdependent and I see it as an essence of my art."

Sally Man
From Lexington, VA, her photographs often allude to darker and more serious themes of loss, sexuality, loneliness, and death.
Definitely a certain aesthetic, but I enjoy the reality of her work.

Steve is an artist who lives and works in Atlanta. Beautiful oil on canvas and his canvases are massive- which make them even more impressive. A few I love:
Teddy Roosevelt

Abraham Lincoln

James Brown

Also a Southern American artist. I first stumbled upon her work in Atlanta at the Soho Myraid Gallery. It's very interesting and abstractly-unique. Mostly resin on wood.
"Wave"
Cyanotype and ink on paper

NY artist who uses oil and resin on wood panels or canvas. I love the ethereal quality to her work.

"Camouflaged in all but Song"
"View from the hill 2010"

"Tropical Depression"
Moshe is a contemporary American glass artist. His tiled glass series is a favorite of mine.

I love Rebecca Bennett. Her work seems so simple, but is so complex. It's soothing. A quality I admire.

To wrap up, check out Curate 1K- a site that finds $1000 worth of art each week and tells you where to buy it.

And also, 20x200, a great site full of affordable prints. Repeat: affordable.

You have no excuse now.
